Hourglass Surreal Light Palette

My first Ambient Lighting Powder was where my love of finishing powders started. I first purchased Dim Light, which is described as “a neutral beige powder that blurs imperfections and highlights a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones”. After trying this powder, I realized the power of being able to shift the look of your makeup ever so slightly. I learned to use them to blend the makeup I was already wearing, making my contour softer, my blush more glowy, and my complexion look gently lit from within. They can give the appearance of a change in lighting and they photograph beautifully.

The Surreal Light Palette, $80, is the newest release in the Ambient Light family. This limited edition palette. was released first for Sephora VIB Rouge members, and it is now available for all, as of today. If you’ve been coveting this palette, grab it now, as it is bound to sell out quickly. The  first standout feature is the packaging. The usual metallic packaging is traded for a stunning matte marbled plastic that looks just like stone. I’m a sucker for packaging, and this palette was so clearly made to be photographed.

This palette comes with five powders; two blushes, a bronzer, a highlighter, and an all-over powder. The largest powder is the namesake of the palette; Surreal Light. This one is meant to be used as a setting powder.

The blushes can be found on the top row. The more neutral toned color on the left is called Surreal Glow, and the more pinky-peach one is called Surreal Effect.

On the bottom row, you will find the bronzer, Surreal Bronze Light on the left and Surreal Strobe Light, the palettes highlighter, on the right.

These are baked powders, so each of the marbled ones (the two blushes and the bronzer) are unique. The powders are extremely finely milled, so they will blend easily. All five of these colors are exclusive to this palette. Here’s what Hourglass has to say about this palette:

“Discover the most covetable Ambient® Light yet. Introducing Surreal Light – a sheer nude powder evoking the magic hour of perfect lighting where the sun brings the softest, most flattering glow to the complexion. These never-before-released shades of powder, bronzer, blushes and highlighter are available exclusively this holiday season. “

Now, I need to talk a little bit about the elephant in the room here: the price. $80 is pretty damn steep, even for a makeup collector like me. If you’re looking for a gorgeous product that is a pleasure to use, go for it. But if you’re looking for value–if only when compared to Hourglass’ existing prices–you will not find it here. You’re only getting 0.30 oz of product.

From L to R: Surreal Light, Surreal Glow, Surreal Effect, Surreal Bronze Light, Surreal Strobe Light

Their normal Ambient Lighting Powders each come with 0.35 oz of product for $46. I encourage you all to check out Temptalia’s blog post about the product. She calculates that the value of the product when considering the cost of their blushes, bronzers, strobing powders is about $53.30. Ouch. Even for a luxury brand, it is a considerable price tag.

Another con (but a pro for me!) is that this palette is definitely not ideal for those with a medium to dark skin tone. This is definitely catered to fair to light skin tones, so if you’re a little more on the medium end of the spectrum, I would recommend ordering it from Sephora so that you can return it if it does not work for your coloring. Surreal Light and Surreal Strobe light definitely lean a bit yellow, but keep in mind that the swatches are quite concentrated and not as intimidating when applied with a brush.

I only received this yesterday, so I have only had a chance to use this palette once. Like the other blushes and strobing powders of theirs that I have tried, the ones in this palette are beautiful and have their signature diffused light finish. They blur imperfections and have a really unique finish to them. I had never tried one of their bronzers before, and from my first experience with it, I found the bronzer to be very buttery, blendable, and overall, a lovely way to add dimension to the skin.

All of the powders blend together nicely, so you can easily customize your look by mixing any of the powders together. If you’re looking for a unique palette that allows you to bronze, highlight, blush, and perfect your complexion, this is definitely a great product to have.

I’ll try to update this post with some photos of the look I created with this palette once I can get the right lighting!
